About this Project

Purpose Of The DNA Bank/Database

The Foundation has created a DNA Bank as it is the most effective means to:

This Database is the first database of its kind. It is the result of dog owners and the research community working together to build a comprehensive database that will produce anonymous data that can be useful to dog owners as well as the research community. The purpose of this database is to compile associations on all the factors that may influence the health of a Samoyed. This unique database will compile in one database all the factors that may influence, promote the onset or development of disease (s), and draw correlations with phenotypic traits that may be associated with the onset and development of a disease (s) with the actual DNA of the Samoyed breed.

Periodically, the DNA bank will report anonymous statistical information on the Samoyed breed to the public and research community with no identifying references to the actual Samoyeds or their owners. All owner personal information will remain completely private, unless the actual owner gives permission for further contact from the research community, the DNA bank or the SCA Foundation.

Overview of the Database Directories

The SCARF DNA Bank/Database consists of three directories.

  1. Data Entry for Samoyed Records  -- This is the main database.  This record must be added before your Samoyed may be entered into Incident or Death report databases.
  2. Data Entry for Samoyed Incident Report - companion database
  3. Data Entry for Samoyed Death Report - companion database

In main directory, a "record" is created for each individual dog. Each record contains "fields" which contain specific pieces of information.  The SCARF DNA Bank/Database was created using a relational database (MySQL). Relational databases allow for linking of various directories together through the use of common information entered into "fields".   Certain "fields" such as the "identification code" or the "registration number" will be able to tie these different directories together to give a complete picture of that dog.
